Container Gym Reviews — Owners Speak After 1–3 Years

Every manufacturer says their product is brilliant. So instead of telling you ourselves, we asked the people who actually own one — owners who have had a container gym for one, two, three years. We asked the blunt questions: what worked, what do you regret, what would you change?

Here’s what they told us.

Mark, near Manchester — owner for 2.5 years

Gym Box 9×3, private garden gym, trains 5 times a week

“I got the container in 2022 thinking it was a stopgap — something to use until I built a proper garage extension. Two and a half years on, the container is still here and the extension never happened, because… why would it? Everything I need is inside.

Kit: a power rack, free weights, a treadmill and a bike. Through winter it’s been faultless — the electric heater brings it up to temperature in about 20 minutes, and a UK winter is hardly Siberia. The one thing I’d change: I’d have ordered the version with bigger glazing from the start. It was a touch dark in the mornings, so I added some extra LED strips. Other than that — zero problems.”

Sarah, near Reading — owner for 1.5 years

Gym Box 8×3, on-site gym as a staff benefit at a small business

“I run a company with a team of around fifteen. I bought the container as a perk for the staff — somewhere they could move after work. I genuinely didn’t know how they’d react. It turned out to be one of the most appreciated parts of the package — more so than a gym membership scheme, because it’s right here on site with no travel.

What would I do differently? I’d have planned the siting better — it ended up a bit further from the office than I wanted because I didn’t think it through before delivery. But that’s a minor gripe. The product itself: solid, not a single fault in eighteen months. Worth checking the tax treatment with your accountant if you’re buying through the business, by the way — capital allowances made the numbers look a lot better than I expected.”

Tom and Katie, Glasgow — owners for 3 years

Gym Box 7×5, gym for the family and friends, occasional small group sessions

“Three years in and we’re still delighted. We went for the larger studio-size model because I knew the two of us would train together and friends would drop round. Glad we did — at 35 square metres there’s genuinely room for three or four people at once without anyone getting in the way.

Only real notes: the air conditioning we fitted from day one was the best decision — a stuffy summer session is no fun, and even in Scotland we get warm spells now. We don’t regret a penny of what we spent. If I tot up what we’d have paid for three years of family gym memberships, this paid for itself a long time ago.”

Paul, near Liverpool — owner for 1 year

Gym Box 8×3, private gym at a weekend retreat

“I’ve got a place about 20 miles outside Liverpool that we use at weekends. I put the container in so I wasn’t hunting for a local gym every Saturday and Sunday. The first year flew by.

What pleasantly surprised me: the speed. I signed the contract and six weeks later the container was standing and ready to train in. I’d braced myself for a planning saga and trouble with the groundworks, but the Gym Assistance team handled the lot. (If you’re unsure where you stand on planning, their garden gym planning permission guide is worth a read first.)

What would I change? I’d have added a free-standing pull-up rig straight away — the one on the rack is fine, but I like doing muscle-ups and there isn’t quite enough clearance around it.”

Anna, near Birmingham — owner for 2 years

Gym Box 9×3, strength training and knee rehab

“I started out rehabbing after an ACL reconstruction and I didn’t want to drive across town to a gym or physio every other day. The container solved it — I can train when I want, for as long as I want, without feeling like I’m hogging a machine.

Two years on, my training is back to full intensity and the container is still doing its job. The rubber flooring is in perfect condition and the kit has had no faults at all. The only thing: over summer I had to add external blinds on the west-facing windows — the late afternoon sun really heated the place up after 3pm.”

What comes up again and again?

Read across all the feedback and a handful of themes recur regardless of the owner, location or model:

The positives:

  • Speed of delivery — owners are surprised the whole process, from order to first workout, takes 6–10 weeks. (More on that in our lead-time guide.)
  • No technical problems — across 1–3 years of use, not one structural fault with the container itself
  • Convenience — a gym with no commute and no queue for the kit is something owners simply won’t give up
  • Return on investment — after 2–3 years, the cost of memberships and travel overtakes the cost of the container

Worth thinking about up front:

  • Air conditioning and ventilation — several owners added it later; better to spec it from the start. See our HVAC guide.
  • Siting — once it’s placed, a container isn’t easy to shift; think through orientation and access before delivery
  • Lighting — with smaller windows, extra LEDs are all but essential

If you want hard numbers behind those payback comments, our container gym cost guide for the UK walks through them. As a rough anchor, a private garden Gym Box starts from £13,000 — and most owners above feel the convenience alone justified it.

Would they buy again?

Every owner we spoke to said yes — and most said they’d order the same again, just with one tweak: bigger glazing, AC from day one, or a touch more thought on siting. None of them regretted the purchase itself.
