Will It Fit in a London Garden?
This is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on the garden, but it fits more often than people expect.
A Gym Box 8×3 (24 m²) requires approximately 9 × 4 m of clear space including a turning radius for the delivery vehicle. Many suburban London gardens – in areas like Bromley, Richmond, Kingston, Barnet, Enfield or Croydon – accommodate this comfortably.
A typical mid-terrace in inner London with a 6 × 8 m courtyard garden is often too tight for the standard module. In those cases we recommend the Gym Box 8×3 placed along the rear boundary, which can be installed using a crane or forklift over the rooftop – we assess this on-site, free of charge.
For larger suburban gardens (Chiswick, Wimbledon, Hampton, Orpington), the full range including the 11×3 studio model is typically feasible.
Planning Permission in London
For most residential properties in Greater London, a container gym qualifies as a permitted development – meaning no formal planning application is required. The key conditions:
- The structure is placed in the rear garden
- It does not occupy more than 50% of the garden area
- The height does not exceed 2.5 m within 2 m of a boundary (or 4 m with a dual-pitched roof further from boundaries)
- The property is not a listed building and the garden is not in a designated area
London borough variation: Some London boroughs – particularly those covering Conservation Areas or Article 4 Direction zones – have removed permitted development rights for outbuildings. This applies to parts of Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Camden, Islington and several others. We check planning requirements for your specific postcode as part of the free quote process, at no extra cost.

Why London Clients Choose Gym Box
London gym memberships average £60–£110 per month. Add commute time (30–60 minutes each way in most areas), parking and the frustration of peak-hour queuing for equipment, and the case for a private home gym is straightforward.
The Gym Box breaks even against a London gym membership in 18–24 months, after which every session is free.
