Corporate Gym – The Benefit That Actually Gets Used

The gym membership nobody uses

Your company pays for gym memberships. Half your employees signed up in January. By March, two-thirds have stopped going. The direct debit keeps running.

Sound familiar?

A gym card is a passive benefit. It requires commuting, queuing, rearranging schedules. The friction is enough to kill the habit for most people.

A gym on your premises is different. Before the morning stand-up. During lunch. Last thing before the commute home. No extra journey, no queues, no excuses. The habit forms because the barrier disappears.

What the numbers say

Reviews of workplace health programmes – the German iga.Report 28 (2015) and Chapman’s meta-evaluation of 62 studies (2012) – report:

➜ On average around a quarter fewer days lost to sickness
➜ A return of roughly 1:2.7 on absence costs
➜ The biggest benefit where a programme combines several measures rather than a one-off initiative

One caveat we would rather flag ourselves: those figures describe complete health programmes – classes, advice, activity – not a gym on its own. The gym is the infrastructure that makes them part of the working day; the effect depends on how many people actually use it.

An illustrative example, so you can redo it with your own figures: UK employers reported an average of 9.4 absence days per employee in 2025 (CIPD, Health and Wellbeing at Work). For a company of 50 people that is 470 days; a 10% reduction is 47 days, or roughly £16,000–24,000 a year at £350–500 per day of absence (salary plus lost output).

Set that against the one-off cost of a Gym Box (prices in the FAQ below) – on those numbers the saved absence alone takes a few years to cover it, so the case rests on the recruitment and retention effects as well, which are real but harder to price.

Why a module instead of a room in the office

Office space is expensive, and a room converted into a gym needs ventilation, sound insulation and weeks of building works. A Gym Box stands outside – in the car park, the yard or the grounds – and arrives with insulation, air conditioning, LED lighting and sports flooring already fitted.

UK tax treatment

As a UK business, a Gym Box for your staff can be tax-efficient:

➜ Capital allowances – the module and its equipment can often be claimed as plant and machinery, with the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) in year one; confirm the treatment with your accountant
➜ Operating lease – monthly payments are generally deductible as a revenue expense; no capital outlay required
➜ P11D considerations – a gym that is open to all your employees, not available to the general public and used mainly by staff and their families is generally exempt from Benefit in Kind reporting (ITEPA 2003 s.261; HMRC guidance EIM21825); confirm your own set-up with your accountant
