Table tennis in a GymBox — is it possible?

Yes — and without giving up on the gym. The key is choosing the right module size and a smart zoning plan. Table tennis needs more room than you’d think, but with a folding table and a considered design it fits from a 9×3 m module (27 m²).

GymBox with table tennis is the answer for families who want a space for everyone — both the adult doing strength training and the child who’d rather play table tennis with you.

Dimensions you need to know

A table-tennis table has standard dimensions of 2.74 m × 1.525 m. For comfortable play you actually need a lot more space — including player run-off, freedom of swing, and room for spectators.

Use levelZone around the tableMinimum room dimensions
Recreational (family play)1.0 m each side4.7 m × 3.5 m
Semi-amateur2.0 m each side6.7 m × 5.5 m
Training / competitive3.0 m at the back, 1.5 m at the sides8.7 m × 4.5 m

➜ For recreational family play a 9×3 m or 6×5 m module (bestseller) is enough ➜ For regular training — 7×5 m or custom ➜ GymBox 6×5 or 7×5 is a comfortable layout for both zones at once

Permanent table or folding? Our recommendation

For most installations we recommend a folding table (Cornilleau, Joola, Butterfly with rollers). Reasons:

➜ A folded table is ~50 cm deep — sits against the wall and takes virtually no space ➜ Setup takes 30 seconds ➜ Half-folded vertically = solo serve practice (drill without a partner) ➜ Price of a good table with trolley: £300–900 — included in the module quote

A permanent table mounted on site is an option only for dedicated 7×5 m modules and larger.

│ ~15 m² │ ~12 m² │
└───────────────────────────────────────────┘

In a 9×3 m module the table-tennis zone is ~4.5 m × 3 m when the table is set up. That’s recreational level — comfortable family play. For a demanding player we recommend 7×5 m.

Flooring in the table-tennis zone

This is one of the more important design choices. 15 mm training rubber — great for the gym — is bad for table tennis (ball bounces unpredictably and spin is lost).

FlooringSuitable for table tennis?Notes
Rubber 15 mm✗ NoToo soft, ball is dampened
Hard PVC sheet✓ GoodClassic table-tennis hall, OK for recreation
SPC vinyl plank✓ Very goodHarder, better bounce
Sports parquet✓ ProfessionalBest bounce, higher cost

➜ Hybrid solution: rubber under the strength zone + harder flooring in the table-tennis zone ➜ Boundary marked by a transition strip or change of colour

Lighting above the table — why it matters

Table tennis needs even, shadow-free lighting — particularly above the central part of the table. Standard spot lighting creates shadows on the ball and makes play harder.

In a table-tennis configuration we design: ➜ Linear LED strips above the table (module ceiling, along the table axis) ➜ Colour temperature 5000–6500K (cool daylight) — the ball contrasts with the background ➜ Suspension height: min. 2.5 m above table level

The same lighting works perfectly in the strength zone too.

Who’s it for?

➜ Families with school-age children — table tennis as an activity for the whole household ➜ People who used to play and want to get back into regular practice ➜ Owners of leisure venues — table tennis as a guest amenity ➜ Companies — office table-tennis tournaments as team integration
