What about converting a garage or spare room?
Converting a room you already have is a different kind of project. There’s no structure to pay for, but you work within the limits of the room — ceiling height, floor loading, damp and ventilation — and the space is lost to its original use. It’s usually a DIY or local-builder job, and costs depend so much on the room’s starting point that a single price range would mislead more than it helps; the equipment figures above apply either way.
A Gym Box is the route when you want a dedicated, insulated training building in the garden that doesn’t take a room away from the house.
What drives the cost?
1. Equipment brand and quality
Commercial-grade equipment (Life Fitness, Technogym) costs 3–5× more than entry-level brands. The quality difference is real – but so is the price.
2. Flooring
A good rubber floor is non-negotiable for safety and noise. Budget £25–50/m² for quality.
3. Climate control
Air conditioning + heating adds £1,700–4,300 to the budget but makes year-round use comfortable. Don’t skip it.
4. Lighting and audio
Often an afterthought, but good lighting improves every session. Budget £430–1,700.
What’s actually worth paying for?
➜ Don’t skimp on the rack – you load it with 200 kg. Cheap racks flex and fail.
➜ Don’t skimp on the floor – it protects the structure, reduces noise, prevents injury.
➜ Do consider buying mid-range – there’s a quality sweet spot between entry-level and commercial.
